Barcelona Arrive in Istanbul as Heavy Favourites

Galatasaray host FC Barcelona at the RAMS Park on Tuesday evening in what looks, on paper, a significant mismatch. Barcelona arrive in imperious domestic form, sitting top of La Liga with a perfect five wins from five recent league outings, while Galatasaray, despite leading the Super Lig, carry a heavily depleted squad into one of their biggest European nights of the season.

Form

Barcelona's recent league performances have been extraordinary. Five consecutive wins, 22 goals scored, and an xG of 3.75 per game on the road tells the story of a side operating at a different level to most of Europe right now. The 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander and a 5-0 away win at Valencia underline just how ruthless Hansi Flick's side have been in front of goal. Their defensive numbers are equally impressive, conceding fewer than one expected goal per game across recent away fixtures.

Galatasaray's form is more mixed. Four wins from their last five Super Lig games looks solid on the surface, but a 4-0 away defeat to Trabzonspor sits awkwardly in that run, and their xG numbers suggest they have been more clinical than their underlying performance warrants at times. The 3-2 win at Başakşehir, for instance, came despite an xG deficit of 1.5 to 1.87.

xG/902.22 (2nd)3.49 (1st)
xGA/900.90 (2nd)0.89 (1st)

Galatasaray's defensive record in the Super Lig is a concern. Ranked 11th for goals conceded per 90, they have been leaking more than their xGA suggests they should, which points to some poor finishing from opponents rather than genuine defensive solidity. Against a Barcelona attack of this quality, that gap could be punished severely.

Availability

Galatasaray's squad situation is alarming. Six players carry No Eligibility suspensions into this fixture, including goalkeeper Arda Yilmaz, forward Armando Guner, and midfielder Murat Eyup Aydin, all rated as high-impact absences. Defenders Kaan Ayhan, Arda Unyay, and Kazimcan Karatas are also suspended, stripping the backline of considerable experience. Wilfried Singo adds to the defensive headache with a muscle injury.

Barcelona are without Frenkie de Jong, who continues his recovery from a knee medial ligament tear, and Roony Bardghji is out long-term with a cruciate injury. The more pressing concern is Raphinha, who has missed one game with thigh problems and is rated a high-impact doubt. Andreas Christensen is also a doubt with a thigh muscle strain. Even accounting for those absences, Barcelona's squad depth means the overall quality available to them remains far superior.

Schedule

Both sides are on short rest. Galatasaray played at home to Kasimpasa four days ago, while Barcelona beat Getafe three days before this kickoff. Neither club has a European fixture before Tuesday, but both face another Champions League match within eight days of this one, which may influence squad management in the second half.

Fine Line Model

OutcomeModel %
Galatasaray win32.08
Draw19.72
Barcelona win48.23

The Fine Line model gives Barcelona a near 50 per cent chance of victory, with both teams to score rated at 62 per cent and over 2.5 goals at 67 per cent. The most likely individual scorelines in the model are a Barcelona win by a two-goal margin, a 1-2 away win, and a 1-1 draw. Given the scale of Galatasaray's suspension list and Barcelona's current form, the direction of those probabilities is hard to argue with.

What to Watch

Whether Galatasaray can keep this competitive in the first half will be the key question. Their xGA numbers suggest they can defend reasonably well in normal circumstances, but the suspension crisis across the backline changes that calculation considerably. Barcelona's ability to create high-quality chances from multiple positions means Galatasaray's makeshift defence will be tested from the first whistle.
